Proud To Be Indian

Bringing the Loom into the Modern Indian Context

Having worked with a plethora of carpet design traditions that are dominated by Indo-Persia, Indo-Nepal & Indo-China influences, we felt the time had come to showcase the milieu of design that is Indian culture.

Looking to our country’s celebrated designers to reinvent the loom, Obeetee launches the Proud To Be Indian campaign – a movement that translates our colourful tapestry of design & artistry into the modern Indian context. The crème of India’s creative talent, together with Obeetee’s most skilled weavers render an inspired series of the modern Indian carpet.

Renowned for his aesthetic of inspired reinvention, Tarun Tahiliani helms the first series of this campaign with his quintessential aesthetic of understated opulence. The three collections that span his series reflect the distinct nuances of Lucknavi Chikankari, Rajasthani Miniature Paintings & his Original Abstract Art. Each creation unravelling a hand-woven work that pays tribute to indigenous India, as it tells its own story.

Obeetee is proud to partner with Abraham & Thakore to make rugs that represent design, material and craftsmanship that are local, yet exceptional in heritage and quality. We collaborated with Abraham & Thakore because we were attracted to their unique sensibilities, which are both cutting-edge yet tied intricately to India’s ethos

Their Journey with Obeetee

Abraham & Thakore is one of India’s most successful and respected design houses for fashion and accessories as well as textile products for the home. This design label was initially established by David Abraham and Rakesh Thakore, who were later joined by Kevin Nigli.

Each Abraham & Thakore collection continues the exploration of developing a quiet and modern design voice while simultaneously drawing on the rich traditional vocabulary of Indian design and craft. Playing with techniques and new structures to explore and develop modern simplistic designs with references to Indian heritage epitomises their key design statement and ethos.

Our Journey from Mirzapur to the World

Founded as Oakley, Bowden & Taylor, our story begins in 1920 in Mirzapur, India - a town on the Grand Trunk Road that became the heart of rug-making in India. Ethical craftsmanship, innovative design & traditional processes gives Obeetee the distinction of being the most reputable exporter of hand-made rugs from India.

Having piqued the interest & earned the patronage of the likes of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehra & Amitabh Bachchan over the years, we have grown to be the oldest manufacturer of rugs from India & one of its largest exporters in the world.

With over 25,000 independent artisans & 1,000 permanent employees under our canopy, Obeetee is cutting-edge in its design while being rooted in our traditional craft and century-old legacy.
